FAQ

Georgia Notary Services

1. What does a Georgia notary public do?
A Georgia notary public serves as an impartial witness to the signing of important documents, verifies the identity of signers, and helps deter fraud. Notaries may also administer oaths and affirmations.

2. What types of documents can you notarize?
Common documents include affidavits, powers of attorney, deeds, titles, loan documents, consent forms, and sworn statements. If you’re unsure whether your document can be notarized, feel free to ask.

3. What do I need to bring to get a document notarized?
You must bring:

  • A valid, government-issued photo ID (such as a driver’s license or passport)

  • The complete document (unsigned—signing must occur in front of the notary)

  • All parties who are required to sign

4. Does my document need to be filled out before notarization?
Yes. All documents must be fully completed before notarization, except for the signature itself. Notaries cannot help fill out or alter documents.

5. Can you notarize a document if it’s already signed?
No. Georgia law requires that the signer personally appear before the notary and sign the document in the notary’s presence.

6. Do you provide legal advice or explain documents?
No. Georgia notaries are not attorneys and cannot provide legal advice, explain documents, or tell you which type of notarization you need.

7. How much does notarization cost in Georgia?
Georgia law allows notaries to charge up to $2.00 per notarial act. Additional travel or convenience fees may apply for mobile notary services and will be disclosed in advance.

8. Do you offer mobile notary services?
Yes (if applicable). A mobile notary can travel to your home, office, hospital, or other agreed-upon location for an additional fee.

9. Can you notarize documents for family members?
Georgia law allows notarization for family members as long as the notary is not named in the document and has no direct financial interest. However, some situations may still require an unrelated notary.

10. Do all signers have to be present?
Yes. Every person whose signature is being notarized must appear in person and provide valid identification.

11. Can you notarize documents in a foreign language?
Yes, as long as the notarial certificate is in English and the notary can communicate directly with the signer. The notary does not certify the accuracy of the document’s contents.

12. What forms of ID are acceptable?
Acceptable IDs generally include current, government-issued photo identification such as a driver’s license, state ID card, or passport.

13. Can you refuse to notarize a document?
Yes. A notary may refuse if:

  • The signer cannot be properly identified

  • The signer appears confused, unwilling, or under duress

  • The document is incomplete or improper

14. Do you offer same-day or after-hours appointments?
Yes (if applicable). Availability varies—please contact us to schedule.

15. Are remote or online notarizations available in Georgia?
No — Georgia does not currently allow commissioned Georgia notaries to perform remote online notarizations. All notarizations must be completed in person with the signer physically present. Some out‑of‑state online notarizations may be accepted under specific circumstances, but these are not services provided by Georgia notaries.
